The Art Of Drafting Football Player Contracts

Player contracts. 

Contractual arrangements can be as simple or complex as the drafter makes them.

In football, the best player contracts protect a football club’s financial position and standing. The worst player contracts can break a football club’s finances. 

Let us consider Sunderland A.F.C. and Jack Rodwell. 


Sunderland A.F.C. & Jack Rodwell 

In August 2014, Sunderland A.F.C. signed Jack Rodwell from Manchester City F.C. on a five-year contract. 

Sunderland A.F.C. did not anticipate that it would be relegated from the English Premier League (EPL). 

Therefore, Jack Rodwell’s player contract contained no wage-cut clause. 

A wage-cut clause is a contractual condition that a football club can automatically slash player salaries by a specified percentage, if the team is relegated from the EPL to the English Football League (EFL) Championship. 

As evidenced in the Netflix hit series ‘Sunderland ’Til I Die’, Jack Rodwell’s playing contract caused significant financial hardship for Sunderland A.F.C. 

As the football club battled relegation from the EFL Championship, Jack Rodwell continued to receive Premier League level wages. 

There was no added incentive on Jack Rodwell to bolster team performances, or actively push for a spot in Sunderland’s starting XI each week. 


Relegation Clauses 

As the old saying goes, some things are too big to fail.

Yet, in the EPL 2025/26 season, the unthinkable almost happened. 

Tottenham Hotspur F.C. (Tottenham), one of the most valuable football clubs in the world, was almost relegated from the EPL. 

Tottenham is a stark reminder that all football clubs should have well drafted player contracts. 

Now, this author is not suggesting that Manchester City F.C., Liverpool F.C., or Arsenal F.C. are also at risk of relegation, like Tottenham. 

These are global brands. 

They are elite football clubs with strong management teams and established squads that are littered with international players. 

However, as in life, nothing is certain in sports. It would be prudent for all football clubs, regardless of their current status or league position, to have relegation clauses in their player contracts. 

As we saw in 2026, with the relegation of Leicester City F.C. from the EFL Championship to EFL League One, no club is too big to fail. Or immune from disaster. 


Automatic Extension Clauses 

Automatic extension clauses are contractual conditions that allow the football club or player to prolong that player’s contract with the football club. Extension clauses typically cover an additional 1-2 years. 

They are particularly useful when dealing with academy players. Academy players are footballers who rise through the ranks of the football club academy. They are valuable long-term players, and in essence, part of the football club’s DNA. 

In securing the future of its best and brightest talents, this author believes that it is prudent that all football clubs have automatic extension clauses for their exciting, young talents. 

As young players, they are likely only going to get better and better, as they become more experienced and gain valuable first team minutes. 

Automatic extension clauses ensure that the football club retains its homegrown talent, and protects its long-term finances.

It is critical that football clubs understand their contractual arrangements with their players.
